Kid Fitness Program
The percentage of overweight children in the United States is growing at an alarming rate. On the whole, kids are spending less time exercising and more time in front of the TV, computer, or video-game console.
Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. This increases to 80% if one or more parent is overweight or obese.
The goals of the Kid Fitness program at the Gym-Nest are...
- To teach children the importance and fundamentals of physical fitness and a healthy life-style.
- To help children understand that physical fitness can be fun and easy when it becomes a habit.
FAQ
Why Kid Fitness? With the alarming rate of child obesity in America today, it has become increasingly obvious that children are not getting enough exercise. Kid Fitness was created in part to teach children about the importance of being physically active.
What is Kid Fitness? Kid Fitness is a program developed to enhance physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. By concentrating on an individual's strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, speed and power, along with a healthy diet, children learn to enjoy good health.
How is the Program Different from Gymnastics? The Kid Fitness program does not teach gymnastics skills. We use our gymnastics equipment for plyometrics, strengthening, flexibility, balance, coordination, body awareness and aerobics. We also use balls, elastic, free weights and other fitness equipment. Circuits are set up with specific exercises to address the areas we are working on that day. Participants get a total body workout by rotating to each station.
Why go to the Gym-Nest? Gymnastics is such a comprehensive sport; it only makes sense that by engaging in gymnastics or related activities using gymnastics equipment, we can improve the above fitness qualities.
Who Can Participate? Any child can participate in a sports conditioning class. Classes are available for 4 year olds through competitive high school athletes.
Do you have to be in a Sport to Participate? Absolutely not! Children who are under-active or who are challenged with additional weight are encouraged to participate. The class is designed to get children moving. Our aim is to show children that fitness can be fun and is important for good health. The class is organized to challenge less active individuals while using modifications for the more athletic child.
Can it help athletes or teams from other Sports? Yes! It has been our observation over the years that some of the best athletes in our communities have participated in a gymnastics program. Most had never been competitive gymnasts, but the skills they learned in such programs have helped them in the sport they were playing. The sports conditioning program allows athletes to condition in the "off-season" or to get ready in "pre-season." We can work on many areas of conditioning that most coaches do not have time to train. Competitive Athletes and their teams can make arrangements for their team to train. It is recommended that "pre-season" training should be at least 2-4 weeks and sessions should be 2-3 times per week.
